Think you have Sleep Apnoea? Take a test and start treating it – fast

If you suspect that you have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, then an in-home Sleep Test provides a quick, convenient and affordable way to have it confirmed.

All treatment options for Sleep Apnoea require a sleep test to have been taken. This service provides a quick, convenient way of having your sleep assessed by a qualified sleep professional.

Our Detailed In-Home Sleep Test uses the revolutionary WatchPAT diagnostic. This device provides accuracy comparable to PSG (used in sleep laboratories for in-depth sleep analysis) but can be used easily and comfortably in the comfort of your own bed.

The WatchPat device monitors your blood oxygen levels, heart rate, body position, body movements, snoring intensity, and crucially your Peripheral Arterial Tone – a key physiological signal that can indicate respiratory disturbances during sleep.

Despite being simple to use and comfortable to wear, the additional information it records gives the sleep technician a comprehensive picture of your sleep, allowing them to return an accurate verdict..

IMPORTANT: This test is intended to assess the presence (or not) of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea only. It will not provide confirmation (positive or negative) of any other sleep conditions. If you are looking for a general sleep assessment or sleep test, or a test for any other sleep disorder, we would instead recommend discussing this with your GP or a private sleep clinic, such as the London Sleep Centre. However, if you suspect that your sleep problems are caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, then this service is intended for you.

Which test option is best for me?

We offer two Sleep Tests – Rapid and Standard. Both are the same in terms of price and accuracy; the Rapid tests allows for results between one to three days earlier than the Standard version, because the data is transferred to us via your SmartPhone rather than having to wait for the device to be posted back to us to download.

Before ordering the Rapid test, please ensure you have a compatible Apple or Android smart device. You can find the WatchPat One app on the Apple App Store or Google Play on your smart device. Alternatively, find the Apple app here or the Android app here.

Don’t have a compatible smart device? No problem – you can order the standard version. You will still have your results within two weeks as it is typically just one working day slower than the Rapid test.

Why choose an in-home Sleep Apnoea sleep test?

It is estimated that up to 13% of men and 6% of women in the UK have OSA. That is around 5.5 million people. Only a fraction of these have had a sleep test conducted.

An in-home sleep test solves many of the issues that prevent people pursuing a test through the NHS.

Speed – Get your equipment the next working day, and your results typically within one week of returning it.

Confidentiality – Your results are yours alone; Intus have no obligation to inform any third party.

Convenience – Sleep in your own bed, at a time to suit you. No need to book time off work for an appointment or overnight stay.

By conducting an in-home sleep test, your Sleep Apnoea confirmation is fast-tracked in the most convenient and confidential manner available.

How does the service work?

After you order your in-home sleep test, the typical timeline is as follows;

Day 1 – We dispatch the equipment to you. This includes clear, concise instructions for the simple device, and a detailed medical questionnaire.

Day 2 – The equipment is delivered to you. You complete the questionnaire and take the sleep test that night.

Day 3 – The questionnaire and device are returned to Intus Healthcare with the pre-paid envelope.

Day 4 – The data and questionnaire are sent to an independent sleep technician for assessment. All of our sleep technicians are NHS-trained with a minimum of 5 years’ experience of assessing sleep studies.

Day 7-10 – The results are returned to Intus, and your results letter created. This letter will contain at least five pages of information to detail your result, what that means and the next steps from there. These are posted to you, along with a copy of the data from the recording.

The following day – Your results are delivered. Within 2 weeks of ordering the test, you have OSA confirmed (or not, if that does not appear to be the cause of your sleep problems).

The above time estimates are working days.

How reliable are the results?

The WatchPAT device used for our Detailed Sleep Test is the most clinically validated home sleep test available. It has been shown to have results that correlate at 90% with Polysomnography – the “Gold standard” OSA diagnostic that requires an overnight stay in a clinic. No other in-home sleep test approved by the main regulatory body, the AASM, can provide this level of accuracy.

The data is analysed alongside a medical questionnaire you will complete. This questionnaire has been reviewed by several of the UK’s leading sleep consultants.

The analysis is conducted by an independent sleep technician; they are paid a set fee per test regardless of the outcome – i.e. they are not incentivised to provide a positive result.

All of our sleep technicians are NHS-trained, have at least five years experience in scoring sleep studies, and are Accredited by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

Intus Healthcare are members of both the ARTP and the BSS professional bodies and are in the process of gaining IQIPs certification.

In summary, we are trusted to provide a professional, reliable and accurate service and have been doing so for over ten years.

What happens when I get my results?

Your detailed results letter will tailor the recommendations for your next steps based on your results. However, the typical steps (assuming OSA is confirmed) would consist of:

Treatment – If your test showed that OSA was present, then you will be able to purchase equipment to begin treatment (providing no other health conditions would preclude that), and start sleeping properly again. The options available will depend on the severity and your medical history and will be clearly explained. Intus Healthcare has one of Europe’s largest ranges of OSA treatment options and with other 10 years experience, we can accurately advise you about the most suitable treatment option and the equipment within that. You may also be able to use your results to help your GP refer you to a sleep clinic. The clinic may then issue equipment for treatment, but in the vast majority of cases they will require their own sleep test to be conducted.

Further investigation – Should you feel you want further investigation into your sleep, then you can discuss your results with your GP. They may then refer you to a sleep clinic, who will determine what investigation is required. Please note that a referral on the basis of your result from us is not guaranteed, but being able to demonstrate evidence of a sleep disorder should make your GP’s decision to refer more straightforward. In some cases, further investigation may be essential, should health issues beyond “just” sleep apnoea be suspected.

Peace of mind – If you are concerned that your may have OSA, then a negative result will give you piece of mind. The WatchPAT device’s false negative rate is close to 0%. Therefore should you continue to experience sleep problems, you have at least ruled one potential cause. Similarly, if you are a heavy snorer you can relax knowing there is nothing more seriously wrong.
